The Arts

The Arts

In 1975, I co-authored (with Richard Keane) the first study in western Massachusetts to prove the significance of the arts in our region. Out of this study, programs such as the Arts Extension Service grew to significance. More importantly, local and regional leaders could finally see that multi-cultural arts were at the core of this regionís character. Northampton is at the center of all that, and should do whatever possible to stay there.

The arts flourish in vibrant cities. It goes back to all those other important factors: diversity, healthy and growing economy, and a strategy for the future.  And it goes to education: Northampton schools should be the incubators of art and artists: new music programs at every level, painting, design, writing, drama, musical theater, sculpting. These should all be core to our curriculum.
